Tooth grinding (bruxism) can result in worn, chipped and broken teeth. Teeth can eventually become loose. The most severe teeth grinding often happens at night. Other symptoms of clenching and/or grinding the teeth are sore jaw muscles, sore jaw joints (TMJs), frequent headaches and sore teeth. The teeth may be sore to pressure and sensitive to temperature – especially cold. We fit patients with mouth appliances that are professionally designed to protect the teeth and promote muscle relaxation. Stress, medications and even obstructive sleep apnea can lead to night time tooth grinding.
Custom athletic mouthguards are also available at Chambers Dental. In two short appointments the athlete can have a mouthguard that will be very comfortable, remain in place while talking and protect the teeth from damage. Adults and kids alike are more likely to wear their mouthguard correctly if it fits well. Some believe that a properly fitted mouth guard may help reduce the risk of concussions.
